How To Dramatically Increase Your Keyword Ranking

Why is keyword research so important to an SEO marketing campaign?  Keyword research is important because, this is where your visitors will be coming from.  Pick about 50 search phrases.  Now look at the volume.  How much traffic can you get to your website for each term?  What kind of competition do you have?  Take the 50 keyword phrases and develop some content on your website.

Pay-per-click is good to test your keywords in.  I’ll take a look at how many clicks each phrase gets and figure out a return on my investment.  The keywords that get a lot of clicks, I’ll use.  I narrow the list down to about 25 words by now.

These are the keywords that will make me money.  The keywords that I cut out I don’t use.  No point in it when you have better search terms.

Then I’ll take the longer tailed keywords and I’ll work on my blog some more.  I work at ranking for the longer tailed keywords first, and then work my way up my list.  Now I’ll do some link building, article writing and bookmarking.

A SEO specialist would say that at the time I start ranking for these longer tailed keywords, I’ll move up my list and work on the keywords that are a little bit more competitive.  The way I look at it is this, if you can rank well for the longer tailed keywords, you’ll do well for the more competitive keywords.

I’ll work on a list and build it up to about 300 keywords before I develop my blog more.  I lean more towards off page optimization. I write just enough articles for testing, but I make sure they are of good quality.   You don’t want people coming to a web site that is full of junk that is disorganized.  Now I’ll try and sell someone else’s product.

The articles you write on your website don’t have to be long.  I like to keep them short, but I packed them with tons of content.  When people come to your website you want them to have a good feeling about it to where it entices them to come back.  Put up a mailing list to collect the names and email address of the people that stop by your site.  Put up a good offer to motivate them to sign up.  Ask the visitor to do things and track to see how many people follow your commands.  This is the time that I’ll put in someone else’s product and I’ll ask the person for the sale.  I can’t tell you how important it is to work hard to get a good mailing list.  Doing this along with good keyword research will help you out in your SEO marketing plan.

A lot of webmasters and developers focus all their efforts on optimising the homepage of their websites, and spend a lot of time pushing all backlinks and links from articles to them. However, this is a mistake which ultimately could lose you traffic, and any business that traffic could bring.

Almost every website should have traffic directed to not only the homepage, but deeper pages within. Normally, your primary keyword might be the homepage, but you might have secondary, or long-tail keyword focused pages linked from the homepage, so you should treat each page to its own linking strategy based around its keyword. This way, you optimise your website for every keyword, not just your primary one.

The primary question however (and this you should know from your page layout) is which pages focus on which keyword. Lets take the example if you had a website called ‘Radio Communications’ which had pages focused on ‘Radio Microphones’ and ‘Walkie Talkies’

The homepage of the website would be built, and marketed around the keyword ‘Radio Communications’, whilst the walkie talkies page would be focused around the ‘Walkie Talkies’ keyword etc.

If you were to then build a backlink campaign, or an article campaign (or both!) focusing on and linking to each individual page, your site would become fully optimised. On occasion you could find that some optimised pages receive more hits and rank more highly (perhaps as they are less competitive) though this all helps with your optimisation strategy! Because of this (and to help the search spiders) it’s crucial to have inbound links joining each of your pages, resulting in your onpage seo to filter through your entire website.

So be aware, though the homepage is critical to your seo optimisation, you should optimise and link to every single relevant page so your site is fully optimised and the search engine spiders (and therefore visitors!) will adore!

Your keywords serve as the foundation of your marketing strategy. If they are not chosen carefully, the right people may never get the chance to find out about your marketing campaign regardless of how carefully planned and effective it may be. Your first step in plotting your strategy is to gather and evaluate keywords and phrases.

You probably think you already know the exact words to use for your search phrases. Unfortunately, if you haven’t followed certain specific steps, you are probably wrong. Objectivity is difficult when you are in the midst of your business network, which is why you may not be able to choose the most efficient keywords from the inside.

You need to think like your customers. And since you are a business owner and not the consumer, your best bet is to go directly to the source.

Instead of plunging in and scribbling down a list of potential search words and phrases yourself, ask for words from as many potential customers as possible. You will most likely find out that your perspective of your business differs significantly from that of your customers.

The only fallacy with this idea is that the more popular the keyword is, the greater the search engine position you must obtain. If you are down at the bottom of the search results, the consumer likely will never scroll down to find you.

Specificity is also important. The more specific a keyword is, the more likely that the consumer who is ready to purchase your goods or services will find you. Let’s look at a hypothetical example. Say you have obtained popularity rankings for the keyword “automobile companies.” However, you company specializes in bodywork only. The keyword “automobile body shops” would rank lower on the popularity scale than “automobile companies,” but it would serve you much better.

Instead of getting a slew of people interested in everything from buying a car to changing oil filters, you will attract only those consumers with trashed front ends or crumpled fenders. In other words, consumers prepared to buy your services are the ones who will find you immediately. Not only that, but the greater the specificity of your keyword, the less competition you will face.

The third factor is consumer motivation. Once again, this requires putting yourself inside the mind of the customer rather than the seller to figure out what motivation prompts a person looking for a service or product to type in a particular word or phrase. Let’s look at another example, such as a consumer who seeks job as an IT manager in a new city.

If you have to choose between “Seattle job listings” and “Seattle IT recruiters,” which do you think will benefit the consumer more? If you were looking for this type of specific job, which keyword would you type into a search engine? The second one, naturally, as it targets people who have decided on their career, have earned the necessary experience, and are ready to enlist you as their recruiter, rather than someone just out of school who is casually trying to figure out what to do with his or her life in between keg parties.

You want to find people who are ready to act or make a purchase, and this requires subtle tinkering of your keywords until you find the most specific and directly targeted phrases to bring the most motivated traffic to your site.

Once you have chosen your keywords, your work is not done. You must evaluate performance across a variety of search engines on a continuous basis, bearing in mind that times and trends shift, as does popular lingo. You cannot rely on your log traffic analysis alone because it will not tell you how many of your visitors actually made a purchase.

Luckily, some new tools have been invented to help you judge the effectiveness of your keywords in individual search engines. Software is now available that analyzes consumer behavior in relation to consumer traffic. This allows you to discern which keywords are bringing you the most valuable customers.

After all, numbers alone do not make a good keyword; profits per visitor do.
