Many people (and I was guilty of this too when I first started my business) think that a dream book or board is a load of baloney! I didn’t believe that photos and pictures of things I wanted could in any way help me to get them! So every time they were mentioned, I would smile and nod, whilst thinking ‘err, no!’

Then whilst I was attending a meeting about my home based business, a lady stood up and began to talk to us about her dream book. This woman was on fire with a passion for her home business! While she showed us what she intended to do with the money she would make, her eyes were glowing, I swear! And I realised at that moment that this lady would definitely succeed in her home based business. The passion with which she showed us her dream book, was amazing! You knew nothing would ever stand in the way of her success. And that planted a seed (just like my last article!!) in my head.

A short while later it was my birthday and I asked one of my daughters to buy me a beautiful deep pink book that I had seen that even tied with a ribbon. I wasn’t even aware I planned on getting a dream book, but when I saw it I knew immediately what I wanted it for! The seed of that thought was obviously planted in my mind by the lady with the dream book!

So a few weeks later I started thinking about what I wanted to put in my book. My WHY was to be able to afford to let my husband leave his job! And that’s where I began, with photos of him and pictures of what he might be doing instead. But as I thought more about it, I realised that I already had a good idea of what I wanted to see in my dream book. It expanded my mind and my thinking – I was actually designing my future life.

This book is ongoing; it changes monthly. Now some of my dreams have started to appear in my life and I find I have more goals to add to my book. New hobbies I have discovered, that I want to spend time doing. And I am remembering long forgotten dreams or wishes I had and perhaps gave up on earlier in my life. I can now look at old dreams again, and see if I want to resurrect them.

And don’t make the mistake of thinking its all about a new car, house or holiday. My dream book is full of how I can help my family, friends and charities. It’s about leading a better, healthier, more fulfilling life. It’s not all about money, but thats nice too!

Sincerely paying the homeowner a compliment about something particularly unusual or nice in the house is a good tactic. Seeing a beautiful quilt set that looks hand-made could be a good focus point. People appreciate it when you notice their things, especially when it’s one of their own creations. Remember, though… Sincerity is an important ingredient here.

If your sales line includes bed coverings and one of your best selling items is a king quilt you might mention that, but add that the quality doesn’t compare to the hand-made example on her couch you’ve just complimented. She’ll appreciate your honesty and perhaps be open to some of your other offerings. If you make a friend you can well make a customer.

Sometimes people may have negative preconceptions of salespeople, especially the in-home type. They may consider them ‘door-to-door peddlers’. These predispositions can be overcome with friendliness, honesty and sincerity. Remember, any favorable sales process should benefit both sides involved in the deal.

In-home sales was once a popular way for companies to sell their products, including everything from encyclopedias to cookware. Brushes, vacuum cleaners and insurance policies were also often sold ‘at the kitchen table’. Today, with the proliferation of multi-level companies where distributors sell to their friends, neighbors and relatives, in-home sales are again on the rise.
