Search all over Google, and most terms are highly competitive to get on page 1 of Google. You really need to be on the first page on some keywords to get any decent traffic to your site. Now, it is not possible usually to pick 20 or 30 keywords and get them all in the top 10 rankings and for them to stay there. Its mostly a time sink and some of the keywords are bound to be more difficult. Finally, once you acheive a decent ranking in a few terms, you cannot just rest and leave it – you must constantly work to maintain your ranking as back links age over time and go away or carry less impact.
An excellent way to build links and maintain them over time is to distribute articles to a article directory or niche blogs to keep new links coming back to your site. The real secret to this part is to make sure its done automatically once setup so you do not have to worry about it. Of course you will still have to write the articles to be posted, but that is usually much easier than the actual posting to the web. One aspect which is often outsourced once a site is ranked is the web content writing for the drip distribution. Although your website contents should all be written by yourself, once you are far enough along with ranking for a few terms it makes sense to outsource some of the work.
Once you have your article distribution model in place on autopilot, you should also think about getting other links as well to diversify the base. One excellent way is to go to Yahoo answers and search for your niche topic and answer some questions each week with a link to your site. The real key to making it work is to answer questions in which you really have some good knowledge to share, meaning there is a high degree of chance your answer will be chosen as the top answer. As always, there are multitudes of other ways to get additional links over time back to your site. All you are looking for is a diverse base of links to maintain and hopefully grow your ranking position in the search engines.
